The grass looks frosty/frozen...are my eyes playing tricks on me?

it's really weird this winter... the grass is always dormant this time of year but with the drought continuing through the winter the grass has a look more like august... dessicated and dry. this was cold and getting colder but no frost.

the grass is just crispy critters.
