this is the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad looking from mineral creek towards Silverton, Colorado. (so named because they were pulling silver out of those mountains by the ton) I ambushed two of the morning trains several times along their route... a fun morning of chase.
I think I was 8 or 9 years old the first time I rode it with my grandfather. lol, I also remember my fly rod was about 2 and a half times taller than I was on that trip.
Mining began in 1860... then in 1875 legal mining began after a treaty with the Ute. the railroad came to town in 1881 and has been in operation ever since. It began carrying supplies and people to and silver and gold ore from mines in the San Juan Mountains. now it carries tourists between Durango and Silverton.
......Statistics from Silverton's cemetery note causes of death in early Silverton as 117 from snowslides, 143 from miner's consumption, 161 from pneumonia, 138 from influenza (10% of the population in the 1918 epidemic) and 202 from mine accidents."
