Miles From Where You Are by catch---22 Miles From Where You Are by catch---22
I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms, and state lines,
The distance from 'A' to where you'd be.
It's only finger-lengths that I see.
I touch the place where I'd find your face,
My fingers in creases of distant dark places...

memories blazing softly
as shadows dance with light
much like the hint of a smile
that battles melancholy.

May you never be too far from where you need to go.
Beautiful work.

I like this a lot. We don't really see places like this here in northern CA.

the hills and forests of my youth. not too many years ago there was a news story about a confirmed sighting of a woodpecker thought to have gone extinct. I didn't know it was that rare until then. the hillside on the left always had a half dozen pairs. it's a huge woody woodpecker type. awesome woods... every inch packed with life.

about a mile down the road an old choctaw man lived. hid family had built him a house but he wouldn't live in it and had sort of a teepee in the front yard... with a pile of crushed beer cans in front of it. he and his dogs prowled these woods with no regard to fences or property lines... dude was like a ghost. you would turn around and there he was grinning. omg it would startle the hell out of you. I was more than sad when he died.

ramble ramble... thanks Mary!

I just finished watching Ken Burn's "Prohibition" and this would make a great backroads scene for for a bootlegger. Nice shot Dennis.

You are so good at these road shots! Makes me want to hop right in my car... except I don't think I'll be finding a dirt road embellished with autumn this morning. :-)

It's so inviting and lovely. It looks familiar. The same road that you loved so much? It's such a cool road. Reminds me of what Arkansas looked like on some drives, though not quite as endlessly visible, because where we traveled wasn't as high, but the trees were. If you were to head toward Arkansas in this picture, which direction: L or R or straight ahead or climb out of monitor into your lap? :D

And that's been one of my favorite songs for some time now. :)
