the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge... this mixed grass prairie remains because even the steel plow shattered in this land... on the edge of the great plains, two ranges of these pink granite mountains rise up around and protect this island of natural prairie. the bison and trickster coyote still reign.
"The word Wichita is derived from two archaic Wichita Indian words: "Weets", which means "man" and "ee-taw" which signifies "of the north". The Wichita Indians felt that their original ancestors issued from the rocky points of the mountains. French traders who visited the area during the 1770's, probably first affirmed this name to the mountains."
most times I would have whistled or yelled to get them to raise their head... but I was way too close and didn't have a good line of retreat. I decided to go with discretion is the better part of valor. It is good to be brave, but it is also good to be careful.; If you are careful, you will not get into situations that require you to be brave... or something. You see saddle mountain at the back left of the image. the locals tell of a lost spanish mine somewhere among its boulders.
my great great grandfather came to this land In the late 1800s from Oneida County, NY. He received 27 acres of land near these mountains in a "land lottery" as the federal government allocated the Kiowa and Comanche Lands.
