Looking down on Lake Como (12,215 ft ) from California Pass. (12,930ft) This is part of "the long way" from Ouray, Colorado to Silverton, Colorado.
These are the headwaters of the Uncompahgre River as it begins its journey flowing off to the right down Poughkeepsie Gulch. Word of mouth says Lake Como is a minimum of 1,500 ft deep. The people measuring ran out of cable at that point. I've not been able to corroborate though. It's the most unreal color of blue.
The third and highest pass of the day...I won't lie. I was mouth breathing at this place.
From here we continued on through a glacier carved, almost perfectly U shaped, California Gulch.
hmmm, I'm not sure it has a name. We began the day by traveling up Corkscrew pass. Corkscrew is accessed off of US 550 near the large capped tailings pile in Ironton Park. At the end of Corkscrew gulch we topped out at Hurricane Pass. From the summit of Hurricane Pass we followed the trail to California Pass, which is only a short distance. From the summit of California Pass we went down into California Gulch. At the bottom of California Gulch we hit the ghost town of Animas Forks. From there we traveled on down into Silverton colorado and took the highway back to Ouray.
