Fanfare For The Common Man by catch---22 Fanfare For The Common Man by catch---22
surely there are few such fanfares as grand as the time of the prairie schooners. there were no roads... no central heat and air... no running water... no internet even. hopeful souls loaded these wagons with what possessions and supplies that would fit and journeyed over this land counting on their wits to carry themselves through to a better life. this is located a few miles east of Chickasha, Oklahoma on the south side of HW-9 (35.043628,-97.839432) where the crosstimbers begin to turn to prairie. I always loved that this points west. it seems proper.

One of your very best! Excellent and soooooo very wonderful to view and imagine what it might have been like back in the day. It's best in the b&w -- very appropriate and lovely to see. Btw, that's not an original covered wagon is it? A refurbished? What is the reason it is there? Sorry if you already explained. I did look for it. :)

thank you so much Claudia... and yep it is a real covered wagon. it's not the iconic "conostoga" which is huge and always looked a bit like a boat to me but this is in the class of what they called prairie schooners. I suspect age and condition wise it is probably from around the turn of the last century.

it's there because this farmer has saved it and is proud of it. most times you see one out or in a parade it has been passed down in a family. another one I loved in a really nice guy's yard burned up in a wildfire. that was beyond sad. his was very very old. it went up like a match.

Cool! I know if my family had had one of those, we'd have taken good care of it and displayed it.

This is such a wonderful picture! I feel like I was just transported back in time..those days were hard on people but without their struggles..we wouldn't be here today..!
My Mom's family is from Chickasha, Oklahoma~ What a small world...they moved West to California during the depression..in the 40's...and then eventually went back to Oklahoma..~~ Very nice story...thanks for sharing!!
